International Conference on Health Issues in Arab Communities in Aleppo , Syria, May 1-7, 2011

The conference will address topics of interest to physicians, public health professionals, policymakers, health care providers, students, health care journalists and others with a stake in the health challenges and opportunities facing the Arab world. The event will promote the World Health Organization-Eastern Mediterranean Region Office (WHO-EMRO) 2010 agenda by focusing on four themes:

● Social Determinants of Health

● Genetics and Health with an Emphasis on Chronic Disease

● Quality Health Care

● Global Warming/Effects of Climate Change on Public Health

Arab Americans share common risk factors and disease patterns tied to their ancestry. When Arab populations settle in the United States , Canada , Australia , and Europe , they experience socioeconomic transformations, changes in lifestyle and educational factors that lead to a change in the prevalence of disease, marked by the emergence of chronic illnesses.

“This conference will provide bridges between Americans and international health and academic institutions and the opportunity for the entire world to meet with their counterparts in the Arab world,” says ACCESS Community Health & Research Center Senior Director Dr. Adnan Hammad, Chairman of the conference. “This unique international scientific forum will promote comparative national and international research to better understand and address the health care needs of Arabs throughout the world.”

Participants will discuss research findings and health programs, and develop collaborative initiatives encompassing different countries with Arab populations. In addition to learning and networking with other health care professionals, attendees will experience the ancient beauty, history and culture of Aleppo , with visits to the souk (market), baths, historic Citadel, and other breathtaking sights. It will be an unforgettable week.

The proceedings from the 5th National Conference in 2008 have been compiled in journal form in ACCESS Health. To read the journal and for more information about the conference, visit www.arabhealthconference.org or email sshenaq@arabhealthconference.org.
