About RI projects

RI works in collaboration on all of its projects striving to combine international expertise, best practices and lessons learned with local knowledge and experience. Most of RI’s projects are carried out in partnership with RI members and with the guidance and expertise of RI’s Executive Committee and specialized Commissions. RI seeks to work with other like minded organizations working to advance the rights and inclusion of persons with disabilities worldwide and welcomes new partnership opportunities. RI works with its members, partners, experts and regional leaders to create and carry out projects with the following objectives across the globe:

What We Have Achieved

Throughout RI’s long history of innovative projects RI has achieved the following notable outcomes:

  • Lead the campaign for the elaboration and adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)
  • Conducted the first global survey on disability
  • Created the International Symbol of Access                     medium-sized access symbol
  • Established the conceptual basis for community-based rehabilitation  
  • Established one of the first self help groups and micro-credit enterprises
    for women with disabilities
  • Contributed to legal reform in Mexico and Argentina.
