Community Based Rehabilitation
Worldwide Applications - visions & resources for the 21st century. This 48 page booklet and accompanying video is the result of an RI project conducted with the generous support of the Arab Gulf Programme for United Nations Development Organizations (AGFUND), through the United Nations Voluntary Fund on Disability. The booklet has three sections: the first is designed as a viewer and trainer's guide to an accompanying video; the second features a series of vision statements by CBR practitioners; and the third is an annotated bibliography of 80 related books, periodicals, papers, videos and training packages on CBR implementation.
This compact publication is in essence a global survey of current research and practice in a diverse field, covering projects for adults and children throughout Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Latin America. The vision statements are by four authors with distinct points of view on the state of the art, two with disabilities, two without, all with experience in CBR projects in developing and/or war-torn countries.
The accompanying video is a compilation of clips from the better CBR audiovisual productions from around the world and essentially provides both a review of the effectiveness of this material and a blueprint for creating media messages about CBR. Media messages about CBR, whether aimed at the public, potential CBR practitioners, the disability community or other influential groups, are considered crucial to its growth, as there appears to be widespread confusion about its goals and what exactly constitutes a CBR project or program.
The video concentrates on three main areas of CBR activities: early intervention with both children and recently disabled adults, integrated programs and services, and public education aimed at attitude change. Barbara Kolucki, a disability consultant on developing country issues, served as project director for this publication and the associated video. The package of both the publication and video is available for US$50; a diskette of the publication is available for $20.
