International Disability Video Catalogue

A 1998 publication of the RI/UNICEF collaboration on childhood disability, this 20 page catalogue describes audiovisual productions that have proven useful for training and education about a variety of issues. The catalogue provides video reviews by Barbara Kolucki and is organized according to the following categories: UNICEF productions, video stories for children, videos available from Child Development Media & Starfilm, videos on children from around the world, girls & teenagers, and for those on a limited budget.

The catalogue was written with the intent to serve two audiences: those who are trying to locate a proven video to use in training or public education; and those who are developing media about or including disabled children and would like to become familiar with other successful approaches to presenting messages about difference. The concluding article for "those on a limited budget" is an attempt to identify 10 videos which are both effective and low-cost.

Dedication
This video catalogue is dedicated to the late Peter Chan, MBE, JP of Hong Kong who only lost one important battle in his life--the one with cancer. Peter was a visionary who well understood the important role of public education and the media in changing attitudes towards people with disabilities. He brought together the professional media leaders with rehabilitation leaders in Hong Kong to work on improving television, film and radio and print products on all aspects of physical and mental disability.

During the 1980s, he was the Chairperson of COMPERE (Committee on Public Education in Rehabilitation) in Hong Kong, a landmark committee, both on a governmental and non-governmental level, with representatives from all areas of disability working together on yearly, comprehensive media campaigns. The Committee was also responsible for some of the award-winning work in the area of public service announcements as well as documentaries and dramas.

In his gentle but persuasive way, from his wheelchair, Peter Chan convinced many who doubted or were indifferent to the importance of a dignified portrayal of children and adults with disabilities. As the RI Vice President for Asia and the Pacific, Peter approved the plans for this catalogue, begun in 1995, and he would have been proud of the numerous examples cited within of outstanding videos produced by his region. Peter, we salute you and miss you.
