William Groulx takes three golds at Road World Cup

Two-time Paralympic champion William Groulx gave USA several reasons to celebrate as he took individual gold in both the men’s time trial and road race H2 at the year’s second

UCI Para CyclingRoad World Cup held in the Dutch municipality of Emmen between 6 and 8 July.

Groulx then joined forces with compatriots Ryan Pinney and David Berling to win the mixed team relay.

But he was not the only US cyclist to stand out over the weekend as the country ended with 11 golds.

Alicia Dana (women’s H3) and Shawn Morelli (women’s C4) also secured two golds each. Thomas Davis (men’s time trial H4), Jamie Whitmore (men’s time trial C3), Ryan Boyle (men’s road raceT2), Jill Walsh (women’s road race T2) claimed individual golds.

But it was Netherlands who ended top of the medals table again as at the first Road World Cup in Ostend, Belgium; this time with 12 golds overall.

Paralympic champions Vincent Ter Schure and pilot Timo Fransen took two golds in the men’s tandem; Tim de Vries (men’s H5), Jenette Jansen (women’s H4), Carmen Koedood (women’s H2) and Laura De Vaan (women’s H5) also topped the podium twice.

Geert Shipper (men’s road race H4) and Daniel Abraham Gebru (men’s time trial C5) sealed two more golds for the hosts.

German cyclists delivered good performances as they celebrated four golds courtesy of Hans-Peter Durst (men’s time trial T2), Michael Teuber (men’s time trial C1), Pierre Senska (men’s road raceC1) and Denise Schindler (women’s road race C3)

The third and final UCI Road World Cup will take place in Baie-Comeau, Canada, from 15-19 August.

The UCI Para Cycling Road World Championships will be held in Maniago, Italy, between 2 and 5 August.
