Surfers with disabilities participate in Ocean Cure event

1 September 2021

The nonprofit organization Ocean Cure held their annual Life Rolls On event on Aug. 7, giving people with disabilities the opportunity to surf some waves.

The activity attracted dozens of participants in beach wheelchairs, who were escorted by hundreds of volunteers to the water. The volunteers were also on hand to help participants stay balanced on their adaptive surfboards.

Kandace Frye injured her spine in a car accident years ago and said this is her third year coming to the event, which is held at Carolina Beach.

“Surfing to me is like a freeing experience,” Frye told the WWAY, a television station in Wilmington. “Like, it kind of gets you out of your chair and gives a sense of more independence and freedom. And freedom away from being in your chair. You forget about your injury, too. And I think that’s one of the best parts about it.”

Founded in 2008, Ocean Cure, based in Carolina Beach, NC, uses the ocean as a source of physical and emotional therapy, especially for those with disabilities.
