Zhang Haidi, president of Rehabilitation International, executive president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and chairperson of the China Disabled Persons’ Federation (CDPF), met with Caroline Elizabeth Wilson, British ambassador to China, at the British ambassador’s residence on Nov. 23, 2021, to exchange views on work relating to persons with disabilities.
Zhang said that the Chinese government attaches great importance to raising awareness around people with disabilities.
The CDPF has been actively engaged in poverty alleviation for persons with disabilities, encouraging the establishment of living subsidy and nursing subsidy systems for them, which has benefited more than 26 million people with disabilities since its launch.
According to Zhang, the country will vigorously develop education for the people with disabilities and help more children with disabilities study in ordinary schools. Special attention has also been paid to protecting the rights and interests of children and women with disabilities, promoting the establishment of a rehabilitation and assistance system for the former, and planning the creation of “To-beautify Workshops” to enable the latter to pursue better lives.
China has established a rehabilitation university in Qingdao, Shandong province, to train high-level rehabilitation professionals and provide better rehabilitation services for people with disabilities, Zhang added.
She also noted that China and the United Kingdom have a long history of cooperation in the field of helping persons with disabilities.
She hoped that the two sides can further deepen exchanges and cooperation in the fields of rehabilitation, education, employment, culture, arts, and sports for people with disabilities and jointly promote the development of persons with disabilities in the two countries and beyond.
Zhang welcomed Wilson and the British Paralympic delegation to take part in the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games and enjoy the Games.
Wilson spoke highly of China’s remarkable achievements in developing programs for people with disabilities and the great efforts of the CDPF in promoting and protecting their rights and interests.
She said that the British government and the embassy have always paid close attention to the work of people with disabilities and hoped that China and the UK could strengthen cooperation in the field and share their experiences with each other.
